Nolan Gould Says It's 'Hard to Bond with People' After Growing Up on Modern Family: 'Never Been to School a Day in My Life'

As a cast member modern family, Nolan Gould spent most of his childhood growing up on set. But the actor didn’t want it any other way. During this week’s podcast episode Dinner is on my account, Gould (25) opened up to host and former colleague Jesse Tyler Ferguson about his unique childhood.

“I wouldn’t change my childhood, I’m really happy,” he said in the podcast. “I got to be a part of such an amazing show. I know that, like many other children, actors are not so lucky.”

Gould played Luke Dunphy Modern family for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020, featuring a cast that included Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, Rico Rodriguez and Sarah Hyland.

Because of his work on the show, Gould said he’s “never been to school in my life,” before catching himself and admitting he took one public speaking course in college.

Gould also admitted that he has been accepted to film school and plans to attend until Modern family was picked up for two more seasons. After deferring twice, he was told he had to reapply.

“I was about 21 at the time and I had a problem with my shoulder,” he said. “I thought I’m not going to apply to film school again and it’s like I never left. … It closed many doors to a kind of ‘traditional way of life’. … It’s hard for me to connect with people about things that everybody’s been through, about what high school was like?” “What was it like dating when you were young?” he continued. “I kind of skipped all that stuff . .I got a call from Ed O’Neill yesterday — one of those classic ‘let’s catch up’ phone calls.

“So all those doors closed on a kind of traditional lifestyle, but it opened this really beautiful door on a traditional, non-linear lifestyle,” he added. “I do many things now, maybe people did when they were young.”

“So I don’t know. I’m happy with where I am now and I’m so glad I could be a part of the show,” he said. – I wouldn’t change it.

As for whether Gould would one day allow his future children to follow in his footsteps with their own show business careers, the actor wasn’t too keen on the idea.

“I probably wouldn’t let my kids,” he admitted. “Although it’s no shame to the people who do it, is it, because I’ve obviously found a lot of joy and love through it, and it’s opened a lot of really amazing doors, and it’s also closed a lot of meaningful ones.”
