Normani 'Devastated' as She Cancels 2024 BET Awards Performance: 'Definitely NOT How I Envisioned This Weekend'

Normani, unfortunately, will not be taking the stage at the BET Awards this year.

On Sunday, June 30 — the same day the “Candy Paint” singer was scheduled to perform live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles — Normani announced via her Instagram Stories that she had no choice but to cancel the show due to “really bad” injuries.

“I’m more frustrated and disappointed than anyone would believe,” she began in the post. “I just wanted to come here and let you know that I had a really bad accident and hurt myself at rehearsals for BET.”

The Fifth Harmony member went on to say that she’s “usually good at handling any situation,” but “I’m just not able to do this performance” due to doctor’s orders.

“I desperately wanted to give you my all on that stage, but performing would delay my recovery,” Normani wrote. “I’ve been going through my process and trying my best to figure out my feelings about this. I’m devastated and I hate to feel it’s a disappointment, but now I have to focus on recovery.”

She added: “Trust me, I hear you and I see you. There is nothing more I wanted to do than to perform for you and also, to return to what fulfills me the most – BEING ON STAGE.”

The “Wild Side” singer ended her message by thanking fans and BET for their understanding of her cancellation.

Normani dismisses rumors of a Fifth Harmony reunion, but says it’s a ‘possibility in the future’

“I send my love to BET for giving me and all the other beautiful black women this opportunity,” the singer concluded. “This is definitely NOT the way I envisioned this weekend, but I believe I will be an advocate for everyone from home tonight. I’m sorry guys and I love you so much 🖤😔.”

Following her announcement, Normani also posted a photo of her injuries showing her wearing crutches with a boot on her right leg and a bandage wrapped around her knee. She simply wrote: “💔❤️‍🩹🥺.”

Normani was scheduled to take the BET Awards stage tonight alongside artists such as Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Will Smith and more. Her performance is set to follow the release of her highly anticipated debut album, dopaminewhich finally arrived on June 14.

In a conversation with The Cut earlier this year, the “1:59” artist reflected on the long wait for her album after initially announcing it in 2018. “I’ve been able to release three albums in that length so far. I am not unaware of that,” she said. “But I felt I owed it to myself to be able to take my time, reinvent and experiment.”

Normani says her parents’ cancer diagnosis got in the way of her creativity: ‘I was definitely tested’

Normani in a recent interview for Rolling stonesaying: “Finding out my mum was diagnosed and then the next year finding out my dad was diagnosed was one of the biggest challenges.”

She added of her album: “I’ve definitely been tested during this process, but there’s a beautiful side to it. I’ve given up a lot to be in the position I’m in.”
