In the 2015 Delhi state elections, she contested against Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and Indian National Congress veteran leader Kiran Walia. However, she lost the election but finished as runner-up.

Derogatory remarks about Islam
On June 5, 2022, the Bharatiya Janata Party suspended Nupur Sharma for making disparaging remarks about Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim community during a television debate. According to a statement issued by the BJP, the party respects every religion and will not allow any party member to make derogatory remarks against any religion. The statement read,
The BJP strongly condemns insults against people of any religion of any religion. The BJP is also opposed to any ideology that insults or belittles any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such a person or philosophy. Every religion has flourished throughout India’s thousands of years of history. The BJP respects all religions. “
After the riots, Nupur Sharma issued an unconditional apology and said she had no intention of hurting anyone’s religious sentiments. On June 9, 2022, she was booked by the Delhi Police for trying to disturb public peace and inciting divisive people. ” On July 1, 2022, the Supreme Court quashed Nupur Sharma’s remarks which led to a series of violence, riots, demolitions and arrests in several states of the country. In a bench headed by Justice JB While sitting before the vacation bench constituted by Pardiwala, Justice Surya Kant orally stated:
She ignited the emotions of the nation…This woman is independently responsible for what is happening in this country. ”
On August 10, 2022, on an order of the Supreme Court of India, all cases filed across the country against Nupur Sharma over her comments about Prophet Muhammad were transferred to Delhi.

- In 2009, she served as guest editor for the Republic Day special issue of national daily The Times of India.
- In March 2009, she was named one of India’s ten most inspiring women by Hindustan Times.
- In July 2012, Nupur was a member of the delegation from India and the Bharatiya Janata Party to the 2012 American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) India-Pakistan summit in the United States.
- Nupur completed several welfare projects such as installation of solar lights, water purifiers and CCTV for campus security and successfully completed these projects while serving as the President of Delhi University Students Union.
