Nupur Sharma was born on April 23, 1985 in New Delhi, India, to a Brahmin family (age: 38; as of 2023). She received her primary education from Delhi Public School, New Delhi. For higher education, she attended Hindu College, University of Delhi and received her Bachelor of Laws degree. Nupur received her LL.M. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in London, England.

Nupur has been the spokesperson of the party and participated in various debates in the media to represent the party’s views. However, she lost the election but finished as runner-up.

Derogatory remarks about Islam

On June 5, 2022, the Bharatiya Janata Party suspended Nupur Sharma for making disparaging remarks about Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim community during a television debate. According to a statement issued by the BJP, the party respects every religion and will not allow any party member to make derogatory remarks against any religion. The statement read,

The BJP strongly condemns insults against people of any religion of any religion. The BJP is also opposed to any ideology that insults or belittles any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such a person or philosophy. Every religion has flourished throughout India’s thousands of years of history. The BJP respects all religions. “

After the riots, Nupur Sharma issued an unconditional apology and said she had no intention of hurting anyone’s religious sentiments. On June 9, 2022, she was booked by the Delhi Police for trying to disturb public peace and inciting divisive people. ” On July 1, 2022, the Supreme Court quashed Nupur Sharma’s remarks which led to a series of violence, riots, demolitions and arrests in several states of the country. In a bench headed by Justice JB While sitting before the vacation bench constituted by Pardiwala, Justice Surya Kant orally stated:

She ignited the emotions of the nation…This woman is independently responsible for what is happening in this country. ”

On August 10, 2022, on an order of the Supreme Court of India, all cases filed across the country against Nupur Sharma over her comments about Prophet Muhammad were transferred to Delhi.
