A multistate manhunt for a suspect wanted in an Ohio murder and two Kentucky kidnappings ended late Saturday night.
The suspect, a 54-year-old man from Ironton, Ohio, identified as David Maynard, took three hostages at a Speedway gas station in Ceredo, West Virginia, just after midnight, according to a statement from the West Virginia State Police, according to the Associated Press. and CBS News.
WVSP said a state trooper was visiting the gas station — located at the corner of 6th Street West and Route 60 — when he noticed Maynard behind the counter and recognized him as the suspect in the chase.
Maynard then pointed his gun at the officer, leading to a hostage situation. Kenova Police Chief Bob Sullivan told WOWK-TV that a hostage negotiator from the West Virginia Police Department’s special task force communicated with Maynard for an hour and a half. WVSP said a negotiator successfully got the suspect to release two hostages before Maynard requested a blanket be placed on the door for the remaining hostage, CBS News reported.

Maynard eventually “went out the door and engaged” members of the State Police Special Response Team, prompting officers to shoot him, according to a WVSP news release. Maynard later died of his injuries at a nearby hospital. The third hostage was safely secured and unharmed, and no police officers were injured in the confrontation.
The search for Maynard began Friday when Ironton police officers responding to a report of shots fired found the woman tied up and Maynard’s 78-year-old stepfather, identified as Donald Wood, dead, WSAZ reports.
“A 39-year-old woman was tied with ropes and [officers] they freed her, then continued to clear the rest of the house and found a 78-year-old man dead, Ironton Police Chief Dan Johnson told WSAZ.

While on the run from the police, Maynard kidnapped two women at different locations in Kentucky and stole their cars. One of the women managed to escape and called 911.
Prior to the holdup at the Speedway, Maynard was last seen earlier Saturday in West Kenova, West Virginia, and a shelter-in-place alert was issued while police searched for Maynard, according to WOWK.
