Omar Apollo Took It Upon Himself to Lose 20 Lbs. Before Filming Sex Scene with Daniel Craig: 'I Had to Get It Together'

Omar Apollo decided that a physical transformation was necessary before he could venture into his sex scene queer.

In the new one Interview magazine conversation with colleagues queer star Drew Starkey, a singer-songwriter (27), revealed that he has a sex scene with Daniel Craig in the film. He shared that although it was not a request from director Luca Guadagnino, he took it upon himself to lose weight for the role.

“I had to go on a soup diet,” he said. “Luca didn’t tell me to lose weight, but when you’re about to have a sex scene with Daniel Craig, you’re like, ‘Oh, man, I can’t look away.'”

I was 200 lbs., because I’m 6’5”. It’s about where I should be, honestly. But I got down to 181 when the film came,” continued Apollo. “I lost 20 pounds. because I read in the script that my character has a flat brown stomach. I said, ‘Damn, I’m actually not straight now.’ I had to get it together, and I was on tour with SZA. Luckily, I didn’t have that many lines.”

Starkey boasted that the Apollo and Craig sex scene was “so good” and “very sensual”. Apollo then added that he had a “really cool experience” working with actor James Bond.

“He definitely has that presence that can be felt from afar,” he explained. “I remember asking him, ‘How do you feel when the camera is on?’ And he said: ‘To be honest, every time the camera is pointed at me, I’m terrified.’ I thought it was wonderful.”

“You have to be vulnerable. You have to be open to those emotions,” he added. “It was such an honest answer.”

During the interview, Starkey said he also went on a diet to prepare for the historical romantic drama. “I lost about 30 pounds,” he told Apollo. “I lost a little bit of weight and Luca said, ‘Hey, put it back up a bit’.”

Adaptation of the novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs, queer follows the self-conscious and insecure William Lee (Craig) as he recounts his life in Mexico City, during which he befriends and pursues Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a recently discharged Navy SEAL from Florida.

The film also stars Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans and David Lowery.
