Reese Witherspoon Honors Her English Teacher With 100th Reese's Book Club Pick: 'You Saw Something in Me' (Exclusive)

Reese Witherspoon is honoring an important person in her life for her 100th Reese’s Book Club selection — her high school English teacher.

In a video posted to YouTube on Tuesday, September 3, Witherspoon, 48, announced that the September book The Crow’s Comfort: A Year in the Yard by Margaret Renkl.

In 2017, Witherspoon started a book club under her media company Hello Sunshine. The Morning show star visited Renkl, 63, at her old high school in Tennessee in a sweet video to let the author know her latest book will be the 100th Reese’s Book Club selection.

As the pair sat in the library, Witherspoon told Renkl that the idea of ​​choosing her latest novel “hit me like a bolt of lightning.” Before discussing the book, the duo reflected on the teenage Witherspoon who was in high school.

“This is going to make me cry,” a tearful Witherspoon admitted. “You taught me so much. You saw something in me and encouraged me.”

She admitted that she read “secretly” as a teenager because she saw books as a “private place” to escape from her life when she was struggling in high school.

Renkl echoed Witherspoon’s sentiments, saying that starting an acting career as a young teenager must have been difficult.

“You were working in a grown-up world, but you were still a child,” she said. “And you were still managing the… cliques and casual cruelty of high school.”

She joked that Witherspoon would ask her for extra homework because she was “hungry” for more books.

“You already knew that language, that stories are a way to make sense of something that’s hard to grasp,” Renkl told Witherspoon.
