Three young girls were able to restore their health on their way thanks to a new heart and a “revolutionary” surgery.
Journal, 11, faced constant stomach pain at the end of 2024, which led to a hospitalized diagnosis that changed in life.
“Her symptoms became full gas to the point that she turned off and her eyes were rolled in the back of her head,” said her mother Rachel Kinsey Today the show. “Then [doctors] were like “We need to test other organs.”
Less than an hour later, Kinsey learned that Journa was in heart failure. Her heart worked with only 12% and she needed a transplant. “She was quite attached [into] Every machine, “she said about her daughter.
Journa was admitted to Duke’s children’s hospital in Durham in North Carolina, and was put on a device to help her pump her heart while waiting for the donor’s heart. Two and a half weeks later she learned that the heart was available.
“We called pretty much in the middle of the night,” Kinsey said. “One of the best phone calls you can receive, honestly.”

Together with the news that she had received the heart of a transplant donor, doctors told Jouri and her mother that the valves from her heart could potentially help others. The doctors believed that, after receiving his newly transplanted heart, the valves from his own heart could help two more girls, Margaret and Kensley, who were also hospitalized.
“At first, I was confused because I thought that when the heart was bad, it’s all bad,” Kinsey said in Outlet. “But once she explained to us that I could use pieces to help other children, my next question was” where to apply? ”
Margaret, 14, a staph infection was diagnosed, which led to endocarditis, bacterial infection of the internal mucosa and heart valve. Her family was told that her heart’s mitral valve had holes in it and that she would ultimately succeed.
“I was very scared,” she said. “Instead of having one hole in my valve, I had three, which is three times bad. And then the doctor said you really needed a new valve, I couldn’t fix it almost.”
In addition, Kensley, 9, was born with a small aortic valve, which was undergoing heart surgery a few weeks after birth. At the age of 1 month, its replaced with a pork valve, but doctors warned that it would need to be replaced as it grew.
A few months ago, Kensley’s health began to suffer and she learned that it was time for a mechanical valve or heart transplant.
After Jouri and her family agreed, Margaret and Kensley were informed that, as a result of the heart of the donor, they would also be able to get their life -saving actions.

Dr. Joseph Turek and Dr. Douglas Overbey, Children’s Surgeons at Duke Children’s Hospital, have performed surgery on three girls. After replacing Journi’s heart, they performed a living transplantation of a mitral valve to Margaret, the first such surgery.
“It’s incredibly revolutionary,” Turek said Today. “Think about … thousands of children who could help in the future.”
The surgeons were then used by passenger donated pulmonary valve to replace Kensley’s.
“It’s just a blessing,” said Kensley’s father Kenan Frizzall in the point of sale. “It’s more than extraordinary, the whole situation.”
“I’m really grateful,” said Elizabeth Van Bruggen, Margaretina Mom.
“Everything perfectly lined up from another family blesses us (with a gifted heart) and we can’t thank them enough,” Kinsey added, Journi’s mother. “We have a child who is a universal donor, helping two other families. It couldn’t be more perfect.”
After their operations, all three girls work well and excited to return to their normal life.
