The journey from Thiruvananthapuram to the town of Kottarakkara, 60 kilometers away, took more than 11 hours in the vehicle carrying the lifeless remains. Large crowds gathered at key intersections along the route and on each side of the national highway to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader. They all personally shared about Chandy’s humanity and how he impacted his life.
At 7:30am, Chandy’s “Puthupally House” in Thiruvananthapuram started the journey of the KSRTC AC low-floor bus carrying the lifeless remains of the former PM. It seems that all preparations for the burial in Kottayam on Thursday will probably fail due to the numbers increasing by the minute. People waited for several hours at various intersections to pay their respects to their leader, despite the heat of the day and the occasional rain. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam were the four districts through which the procession traveled. Dozens of mourners traveled to Kottayam from various districts including Idukki, Alappuzha, Kasargod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Thrissur and Wayanad to pay their respects to Chand.
After a public review in Thirunakkara, the funeral procession of former Kerala Prime Minister Oommen Chandy heads to his ancestral home in Puthupally. On Wednesday, his remains left Puthapally House in Jagathy, Thiruvananthapuram and reached Kottayam more than 28 hours later. The late leader’s funeral has been rescheduled for 7:30 pm Under the leadership of Baselios Marthom Mathews III, head of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, it will be held at St. George Orthodox Church in Puthuppally. Thousands of people greeted the KSRTC bus carrying his lifeless remains as it traveled from the state capital to Kottayam. The vehicle had large, wide glass windows. For more than two hours, his body remained on the Thirunakkara maidan so that people could pay their respects to him.
