Opill, the first over-the-counter birth control pill, is available to order online today.
It is currently only available on Opill.com and Amazon; a one-month pack of 28 pills costs $19.99, a three-month pack of 84 pills sells for $49.99, and you can buy a 6-month pack of 168 pills for $89.99 on Opillo’s website.
A daily contraceptive made by Perrigo, Opill is a “progestin-only birth control pill” — sometimes called the “minipill,” according to the company’s website.
As the Mayo Clinic explains, the mini-pill “thickens cervical mucus and thins the lining of the uterus. They prevent the sperm from reaching the egg and the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.” Combination pills that contain progestin and estrogen work by preventing ovulation, the Mayo Clinic explains. However, with the mini-pill, about half of people who take it still ovulate.

Opill, when used as directed, is “98% effective in preventing pregnancy,” the website explains.
“Opill will be available on CVS.com and through the CVS Pharmacy app in late March,” spokesman Matt Blanchette wrote to CNN in an email. “Beginning in early April, more than 7,500 CVS pharmacies will offer Opill, and for added privacy and convenience, customers will be able to choose same-day delivery or shop online and pick up in store.”
The outlet adds that Walgreens will also offer Opill, once it receives a shipment of the product.
Opill is a daily contraceptive – not an emergency contraceptive, known under the brand name Plan B.
While Plan B is an oral pill that can be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy, Opill must be taken at the same time every day to prevent pregnancy. According to the product information, it takes two days to start working.

“We stand for the right of women and men to decide their own journey to sexual health, and the availability of Opillo without a prescription is truly a historic moment that our entire organization can be proud of.”
