Oprah Winfrey on influence Purple and a new film adaptation: ‘The power of a well-told story’
Winfrey hosted a panel in September, Oprah Daily“The Life You Want Lecture: The State of Weight,” where she discussed the obesity crisis and addressed her own weight.
“You all know that I have been on this path for most of my life,” she told the audience. “My heaviest weight was 237 lbs. I don’t know if there is another public figure whose weight struggle has been exploited as much as mine has been over the years.”
“You’ve all been watching me diet and diet and diet,” she continued, before noting that it’s “recurring because my body always seems to want to get back to a certain weight.”

Winfrey went on to describe how people would treat her differently if she weighed over 200 pounds. “This is a world that has forever shamed people for being overweight. And all of us who have lived through it know that people treat you differently, just like that,” she said.
The former talk show host then explained that she discovered that she faced this stigma the most when she was shopping for clothes.
“It’s that thing when people say, ‘Let me show you the gloves. Do you want to look at the purses? Because we know there’s nothing here for you,'” she said. “There is condescension. There is stigma.”‘
