Optical illusion of ‘Crocs and socks’ reignites years-long debate – what color do YOU see?

We all remember the question that once divided the internet: is this dress white and gold or blue and black?

The two-tone dress has sparked a heated debate online, with users arguing over what colors they can see on social media, but now there’s a new optical illusion.

The controversial graphic involves a pair of Crocs and socks, and the colors people can see are dividing the nation once again.

“Under normal lighting conditions, all people see Crocs as pink,” explained creators Pascal Wallisch and Michael Karlovich, speaking of their illusion.

They realized that when put under a green light, most people see the same Crocs as grey.

“However, some people, those who believe the socks are white even though they look green, can look back and see the pink Crocs, just as they did in normal light,” Wallisch and Karlovich wrote.

“Surprisingly, when we make socks really white, people agree that Crocs are grey, illustrating the power of assumptions.”

The optical illusion tricks your mind into thinking you’re looking at gray Crocs, when they’re actually pink.

In the case of 2015’s ‘The Dress’, Professor Stephen Westland told the BBC that the brain’s perception of color can be influenced by the color of other objects and the light they reflect.

“People think if they take a picture of something they’ll see the same thing, but of course that’s not true,” he said. “If it hadn’t been shot in some very weird lighting, this probably wouldn’t have happened because if you look at the manufacturer’s image, it’s definitely blue and black.”

In 2020, the singer Billie Eilish sparked a passionate debate on the Internet about the color of her shoes: green and white or pink and white.

She shared a photo of the shoes on Instagram and said her father thought they were pink and white.

It turned out that the sneakers were actually green and white, but many of her fans refused to accept it.

Billie herself was shocked by people who couldn’t see the true color of her shoes.

She said: “I don’t know what happened to you in your fucking childhood, but pink and white?

“Is that what you’re going to choose? Pink and white? Pink and white?”

The shoes are actually listed as “mint white” online, which solves the dilemma, but many people insisted they could only see pink.

One wrote: “HOW IS IT MINT AND WHITE AND NOT PINK AND WHITE!? I’M GOING CRAZY. AID.”

Another added: “Billie Eilish is trying to tell me her shoes are mint and white, not pink and white.”
