Oregon Woman Found Guilty, Insane After Pushing 3-Year-Old Girl Onto Train Tracks

An Oregon woman was found guilty except for insanity after she pushed a 3-year-old girl onto train tracks on December 28, 2022.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced in a press release Wednesday that Brianna Lace Workman was convicted of one count of attempted first-degree assault, one count of third-degree assault, one count of obstructing public transportation, one count of second-degree disorderly conduct, and one count of recklessly endangering another person.

Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Nan Waller ordered the 33-year-old placed under the authority of the Psychiatric Security Review Board for care, custody and treatment for up to 10 years. She will be transported to the custody of the Oregon State Hospital, under the jurisdiction of the PSRB.

According to Oregon’s state website, the statutory functions of the Psychiatric Safety Review Board include accepting jurisdiction over the guilty except for insane individuals, balancing the public’s safety concerns with the rights of their clients, and monitoring their progress.

The press release states that “the victim and her family” were present at the sentencing and “look forward to their continued recovery.”

“Multnomah County Deputy District Attorneys Sean Hughey and Julian Samuels prosecuted this case. Prosecutors thank the MCSO Transit deputies who worked on this case,” the statement added.

The incident happened on the Gateway Transit Center MAX platform in Northeast Portland, Oregon. Workman was reportedly listed as homeless and living in Portland at the time of the incident Oregonian.

The district attorney’s office has obtained TriMet video surveillance footage that shows Workman getting up from a bench and pushing the girl onto the tracks as she waited for a train with her mother.

According to a previous statement, the child “landed face-first on a metal rail and rocks before being quickly rescued from the tracks.” After the incident, the three-year-old had a “small red mark on his forehead” and a “severe headache,” according to the statement.
