Heavy drugs continue to wash ashore, and the police and coast guard seized 100 kg packed in waterproof bricks.

So far, a street value of around £5 million has been found with stunned locals struggling to come to terms with the fact that their retirement town is now a hotbed for drug trafficking.

Former engineer Steve Pritchard, 71, took his dog out to Goring Beach, Worthing, where armed officers were guarding 30kg of the drug washed in by the morning tide.

He told The Sun Online: “It probably fell off the freighter in the canal.

“Many more people have been on the beach walking their dogs since the first reports of the packages.

“But here all kinds of things can be washed away. Someone must be pushing it overboard.

“Someone’s in trouble.”

Angel Jameson, 80, who lives in nearby Goring, said the danger it posed to dogs and youngsters was the scariest thing.

She said: “I’m really shocked that it happened here.

“A dog could find one and tear it apart. What if a kid gets hold of one?

– Many elderly people live here and we are not used to this kind of thing.

Brian Parker, 86, said: “Nothing surprises me anymore.

“I was born and bred in Brighton, but we come here because we love nature.

“It has turned into a nasty world and where there is money, there are people after it.

“We never had anything like this when I was young.”

Police were called to Goring on Monday morning following reports that suspected drugs had washed up on the beach.

The packages will be taken for forensic examination along with substances found in Selsey on October 19, Middleton and Felpham on October 13 and Ferring on October 12.
