Pajaree Anannarukarn News

The longest week on the LPGA Tour ended on Sunday when Pajaree Anannarukarn of Thailand defeated Ayaka Furue of Japan by a score of 3-and-1 to win the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play.

Anannarukarn seized the lead definitively with a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole after defeating Linn Grant of Sweden in the semifinals early on Sunday at Shadow Creek.

On a scorching day north of Las Vegas, the Thai kept up the pressure, and to block the heat, both players carried umbrellas. However, they hit some of their finest shots just as exhaustion appeared to be setting in from playing seven matches in five days.

Anannarukarn’s flawless tee shot to a right pin approximately 6 feet to the right of the hole and Furue’s discovery of a back bunker on the par-3 17th brought the match to a conclusion. Furue’s bunker shot slid out about 12 feet after hitting the left edge of the hole rather of the pin, which might have caused it to drop. She gave up the game.

Anannarukarn won for the second time on the LPGA Tour and for the first time since the co-sanctioned ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland in 2021.

It appeared that she might be eliminated two days ago. Karis Davidson of Australia defeated Anannarukarn on the 18th hole, necessitating a sudden death playoff. Anannarukarn’s tee shot went deep into the first cut divot. She may have made the shot of the week, scraping it out and onto the green to secure a par and the victory.

She defeated Carlota Ciganda, a staple of the Solheim Cup, in the knockout round, and then Cheyenne Knight of the United States in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match versus Grant, she made eight birdies, which is exceptional golf given the fast, firm conditions at Shadow Creek.

In the championship match, Furue gained an early lead against the Thai before the first of multiple errors by both players. Leona Maguire of Ireland, another star from the last Solheim Cup, was defeated by Furue in the quarterfinals.

But when the temperature increased, the wind grew stronger. Through 11 holes, Anannarukarn and Furue only each made one birdie, and the Thai wasted easy birdie opportunities on the eighth and ninth holes that would have increased her lead.
