Pamela Anderson Moved Back to Canada to ‘Disappear’ When She Felt Her 'Whole Life Was a Bundle of Mistakes’

Pamela Anderson reflects on her decision to return to her Canadian roots during a dark period in her life in a candid new interview.

In the cover story for the September issue of the magazine Better Homes and GardensThe 57-year-old actress talks about returning to Vancouver Island, British Columbia — where she was born and raised — around the start of the pandemic in 2020. She explains that she was caught up in what she felt was the public’s perception of her — from her career choices to her relationship – and that made her question herself.

“A few years ago, I kind of gave up at some point and needed a change,” Anderson said. “I thought, ‘Well, I guess that’s what people think of me. I wasn’t in a good space when I came back to Canada.”

“I don’t know what happened over the last few decades, but now I feel so far from the picture of who I was,” she continued. “I felt very sad and lonely. I didn’t just feel misunderstood, I felt like I really screwed up, that my whole life was a bunch of mistakes. I was hard on myself and I thought I exposed my family to a lot of things and my kids.”

Anderson has two sons with ex-husband Tommy Lee, with whom she was married from 1995 to 1998: Brandon Thomas (27) and Dylan Jagger (26).

Before moving to Canada, Love, Pamela The author spent two years in Marseille, France. In 2021, she sold her longtime villa in Malibu.

“I got to the point where I decided to move home, disappear and go into my garden,” Anderson said.

She bought a motel that was once owned by her grandmother, which she says her parents brought her home from the hospital when she was born. It’s also where her grandfather instilled her love of gardening as a child.

The Chicago star says expanding her grandfather’s garden was “really like a metaphor for putting my life back together”, where “the smallest things became really profound”.

She also started renovating the property, which required a lot of work.

“I mean, you should see the before pictures,” Anderson says. “It was decayed and rotten to the core. I lived in the other small beach house I had that was livable.”

Anderson says going home “felt like the end,” but it ultimately inspired her to write her memoir 2023, which was released in tandem with the Netflix documentary, Pamela, a love story.

“It took me a few years of transition and reflection,” she says. “Finally I could sit with myself. There was nothing left but to write a lot.”

Anderson is also releasing a new cookbook called I love youthis October.

“Returning to my childhood home revealed a very magical path for me,” she says. “It’s a romantic way of living in nature with compassion and sensuality.”

Anderson’s new lifestyle includes making her own rosehip oil, salt scrubs and candles. And she’s so attached to her vegetable garden that her mother, Carol Anderson, sends her photos of it while Pamela is away shooting the upcoming The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad rebooting the system.

“It may seem confusing to some, but it all makes sense to me,” she says. “I have every type of heirloom tomato imaginable. Oh my gosh, I’m really excited to go home after the shoot is over.”

Last month, Anderson marked her 57th birthday on Instagram with a series of photos of herself enjoying gardening and baking.

The slideshow included a special message: “I will make life more beautiful no matter what,” she wrote.
