Flight LS3214 left the city of Burgas shortly after 13:00 local time on September 16.

About two hours into the flight to the UK, crew members declared an emergency after the man reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

The pilots immediately diverted the plane towards Cologne and quickly descended to the ground.

But despite the efforts of those on board to resuscitate him, the man died.

The return flight to the UK was delayed until later that evening.

A Jet2 spokesman said: “We can confirm John Lennon’s flight LS3214 from Bourgas to Liverpool was diverted to Cologne on Monday 16 September due to a customer requiring medical attention.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that the customer has unfortunately passed away.

“We would like to express our sincere condolences to the client’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”

It happens after the flight attendant drops dead in front of the passengers as they board the plane.

Gabriella Cario – who worked for ITA Airways – did not feel well while waiting at the boarding gate on September 14.

However, the mother of three decided not to seek help because she wanted to return home to her husband and three sons.

She reportedly dismissed the illness as just “fainting”.

But while boarding the plane, she collapsed and died within minutes in front of shocked passengers and colleagues.

All passengers were disembarked while on-site paramedics rushed to the aircraft.

They tried to revive the 57-year-old, but their efforts were in vain.

The tragedy occurred at Reggio Calabria Airport, southeast of Naples, Italy.

ITA Airways flight 1156 to Rome Fiumicino was delayed for the evening after Cario’s death.
