The Christian Broadcasting Network announced in a press release Thursday that Pat Robertson, the famed televangelist who founded the network, helped turn the Christian right into a major political force and ran an unsuccessful campaign for president in 1988, has died.
Christian television evangelist and former presidential candidate Pat Robertson has died at the age of 93.
Pat Robertson, longtime television personality, religious leader, humanitarian, educator and former presidential candidate, died at his home in Virginia Beach early Thursday morning. The press release said that he is 93 years old.
Regent University in Virginia also issued a statement expressing its condolences on Robertson’s death.
William L. Hathaway, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Regent University, expressed his institution’s deep sadness at the passing of its beloved founder. “Dr. Robertson was a widely acclaimed leader, television host, philanthropist, educator, author, successful businessman, and most importantly, a faithful servant of God who dedicated his life to glorifying the Lord and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ,” his obituary reads.
Robertson, who was born in 1930, founded the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1960 and received his ordination as a Southern Baptist minister the following year. She used that platform, as well as her daily show “The 700 Club” (named for the 700-member target group whose promises were to make the station financially viable), to spread her message of conservative Christian values back home, criticizing issues like abortion, feminism, and gay rights.

Ronald Reagan was elected with the help of Robertson’s transformation of the conservative evangelical movement into a powerhouse in American politics. He then unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1988, trailing behind George HW Bush and Bob Dole.
After that, he founded the Christian Coalition of America to support conservative Christian political candidates, and later returned to the “700 Club.”
Throughout his long career, Robertson has expressed a number of divisive and controversial views, often claiming that terrorist attacks and natural disasters are some kind of divine retribution for perceived immorality.
After the 9/11 attacks, Robertson agreed with fellow televangelist Jerry Falwell that God had allowed terrorists to thrive because America had turned to the left and marginalized religion.
Falwell stated on “The 700 Club” that he “really believes that the pagans, the abortionists, the feminists, the gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make it an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all those who have tried to secularize America, I’m pointing a finger in their face and saying, ‘You helped make this happen.'”
