Sachin Sawant became an Indian Revenue Service officer in 2008. In September 2008, he was appointed as Additional Commissioner of Customs and Goods and Services Tax. Sawant served as Joint Collector of Customs, Mumbai from May 2010 to September 2021. He was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant on September 10, 2020. Sachin also served at Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House Nhava Sheva before joining the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Zone 2, Mumbai as Acting Deputy Commissioner. Sachin was promoted as Additional Commissioner of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Central Excise (CX), Lucknow on January 1, 2021; he joined on June 28, 2021. In June 2023, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Sachin Sawant, accusing him of corruption and acquisition of assets disproportionate to his income. There are reports that Sawant, while serving as deputy director of ED Mumbai Zone 2, conducted an investigation into a diamond trading company for allegedly illegally transporting and transferring rupees. 500 crore; However, a person arrested in connection with the case filed a complaint against Sawant, accusing him of demanding bribe. Upon further investigation, CBI officials found that Sawant had accumulated huge assets in his name and the names of his immediate family members – his wife, father and mother – during his tenure as deputy commissioner. The assets are reportedly worth Rs. 245 crore, which is considered to be disproportionate to its legitimate sources of income. Investigators also suspect Sawant owned a BMW and another vehicle through Straw Owners or Benamida. The Education Department later joined the investigation to trace the suspicious money trail. After Sawant’s arrest, he was shifted from Lucknow to Mumbai and the ED conducted searches at his residences in both cities. His relatives’ properties were also searched by the Education Bureau.
