Patrice Failor News
It’s challenging to complain about your day at work when you get home when your job entails handling the most sensitive information in the country. James Comey, a former FBI director, is well-versed in it.
It raises your stress level, Comey added. According to the guidelines, you may only discuss a classified issue with someone who has a need to know about it, a need that is relevant to their job, and the necessary clearance. Your spouse, however, possesses neither, he replied. So it comes as no surprise that Patrice, his wife of more than three decades, avoids conversation.
She didn’t need to know anything about the sensitive issues I dealt with, as much as I loved her and valued her as a lifelong counsel. She also lacked the necessary clearance. She is an incredibly trustworthy individual, but she lacks the necessary clearance, he continued.
Prior to the publication of his book, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership,” on April 17, Comey spoke exclusively with ABC News top anchor George Stephanopoulos about a time when he was alarmed by something Patrice said about his position.
When Comey served as the deputy attorney general under the George W. Bush administration, he worked on a number of topics, including the American government’s use of what some regarded as torture in interrogation methods to combat terrorism. According to Comey, it was generating “a great deal of news and debate.”
Comey stated of his wife, “She knew that, and she also knew I was under some sort of great stress.” “She once told me, ‘Don’t be the torture man,’ one evening. You know I can’t talk to you about that kind of stuff, I said. I don’t want to talk about it, she replied. Just don’t be the one who tortures. And she kept saying that after that,” he claimed.
When he heard her say that, Comey said to Stephanopoulos that “in the moment, it was irritating” because he wanted to respond with an explanation but was unable to do so due to the laws governing information sharing.
You have no idea how challenging these legal difficulties are, I wanted to say. You are unaware of how differently Congress framed torture under American criminal law than you and I would,” he informed Stephanopoulos.
“So when they say, ‘Don’t be the torture man,’ I don’t want to be. But it’s my responsibility as a lawyer to explain the meaning of the statute, he continued. And there are many things that, in my opinion, any reasonable person would consider to be torture but would pass muster under the law.
