Patricia Arquette doesn’t have to be a Hollywood legend to have “magic,” according to her daughter Harlow Jane.
The couple spoke to PEOPLE on Sunday night about their relationship during the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars Viewing Party in West Hollywood, Calif., where Jane was asked what she thought of her mother’s work.
Although she’s “seen glimpses” here and there, “there’s no magic to it because she’s always been a mom, so I just can’t see you as anything other than my mom,” Jane, 21, told Arquette, 55.
And I don’t want you to ever think of me as your mom, honestly, the Oscar winner said. “I’m not acting for validation. I’m grateful for all the success I’ve achieved, but I want to be the authentic me, and the only two people in this world I’m really a mom to are you and your brother [son Enzo Rossi, 35].”

Arquette went on to say, “I want us to have that relationship without any weird distortion of the world coming in, and what does that mean to other people? I try to minimize that in my personal life.”
“The healthy order of things is that your children have the most needs, especially when they’re young, and you should attend to their needs. It’s not about you,” he continued. Childhood actress. “And as you get older, yeah, you get them to be a little more alone and question things and be nice to you, because that teaches them to be nice to other people on the outside.”
“But it’s still not really about you,” Arquette added.
While previously speaking with PEOPLE on the sidelines of the Apple TV+ Emmy Awards party in January, Jane, who is also an actress, revealed that she hasn’t been watching many of her mom’s movies or TV shows.
– I’m not looking at them! she said when asked which of Arquette’s projects was her favorite.

A mother-daughter duo who have worked together on screen
“I really minimize my work at home,” Arquette explained at the time. “I don’t really want my kids to see me … like, ‘Let’s go see mom?’ It’s so weird.”
“I’ve never watched it,” Jane added of her mother’s hit series Severance pay. “I watched a little true romance but, because it came up in the class I attended. I said ‘Okay’. ”
“But I loved it – it was great!” she praised.
The 96th Academy Awards aired live on ABC Sunday from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.
