Patrick Mahomes Explains His Fall to the Ground After Super Bowl-Winning Touchdown Throw: ‘It Was Just All Emotion’

Patrick Mahomes shared what was going through his mind at the end of the 2024 Super Bowl.

During Tuesday’s episode from Good morning AmericaThe 28-year-old quarterback explained why he fell to the ground after throwing the game-winning touchdown to Mecole Hardman.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers was sealed by Mahomes’ game-winning drive. During overtime, the 49ers made a 3-point field goal against the Chiefs, but Mahomes answered with the game-winning touchdown in the final minutes of Super Bowl LVIII.

Mahomes explained GMA to co-host William Reeve that the team was “preparing for those moments”.

“The only time I felt like I was a little nervous was maybe that fourth down play,” Mahomes revealed. “I knew I was going to have to go up and get him.”

As for how he felt after the play, Mahomes said, “It was just emotions; all the emotions, man.”

“I was running and I didn’t know where to go, I had to lie down somewhere, so I fell on the ground,” said the guard. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

The three-time Super Bowl champion added that he strives to win more championships.

“I mean, obviously we’ve had a great start and a great streak, and we’ve done a lot of great things, but we’ve got a long way to go,” Mahomes said. “And so I think if I keep thinking I’ll continue to get better every day I play.”

After the team’s third win in four years, Mahomes became the first consecutive Super Bowl MVP since Terry Bradshaw won it twice, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to back-to-back Super Bowls XIII and XIV in 1979 and 1980. Green Bay Packers legend Bart Starr also was named MVP after Super Bowls I and II in 1968 and 1969, according to ESPN.

He is also the third player ever to win three or more Super Bowl MVP trophies — following Tom Brady’s five and San Francisco 49ers’ Joe Montana’s three, according to ESPN.

After the game, Mahomes and the team discussed the victory on stage. He was asked how he kept his cool to score the game-winning touchdown and called the final drive a “microcosm” of their season.

The quarterback praised his team’s defense for “holding us in there,” and “of course, Harrison Butker,” who tied the game with a field goal to go into overtime.
