Patrick Stump Says He's 'Ridiculously Lucky' That Fall Out Boy 'Has Lasted This Long' (Exclusive)

Patrick Stump knows that musical careers as prolific and long-lasting as his are few and far between.

“I got the opportunity. It’s crazy,” he tells PEOPLE, recalling the work he did in the days before his rise to stardom that taught him a lot about the scope of a typical professional musician’s career.

The Fall Out Boy lead singer, 40, says: “I used to work in a second-hand record store. It was one of my first jobs, which was a second-hand record store, which means people only brought in records that weren’t And so I really became familiar with what music careers usually look like, and they don’t look like mine.”

“They don’t look like the ones I had,” he continues, noting that “some of the artists that I loved or some of my favorite artists ever had one or two songs that people liked.”

Explaining that these artists are defined as simply having an “era,” Stump notes that he’s “so ridiculously lucky” that Fall Out Boy “lasted this long.”

“People still come to see us and I’m doing this show. It’s one of those things,” noting that “any” of Fall Out Boy’s achievements individually “would be a big deal” and their overall success “should be a big deal ” in terms of any individual band’s achievements.

In the years that followed, the band steadily released fan-favorite, critically acclaimed albums including Endless in the height in 2007, Folie à Deux in 2008, Save rock and roll in 2013, American Beauty/American Psycho in 2015, Mania 2018 and latest So much (for) Stardust in 2023

For Stump, the successes of his career are far from lost on him. “I try to take it for granted. I mean, this is crazy. It’s crazy that I have to do this and that I’m doing it,” he muses.

“I’m trying not to think of it too much as an accomplishment, more of a gift. You know what I mean? I’m so grateful to be able to do this,” the singer, who is currently promoting his work on Disney+ and the Disney Jr series Marvel’s Spidey and his incredible friends, he says. “If I could have told myself when I was 12 that any of this was going to happen, there’s no way I would have understood it.”
