They worked together on the West End play in 2020, and became close friends in Paul’s final years.

Dapper Laughs, real name Daniel O’Reilly, shared voicemails from Paul which revealed their struggles together and the incredible support the late Love Island star has provided.

In one, Paul said: “My brother, I just thought I’d touch base to really see how you are, how you feel. All that jazz. Your therapist Pauly is here.”

Dapper replied, admitting, “I’ve been struggling with something similar to what you’ve been struggling with for years, self-destructive things. Since we’re working out, I want to go completely sober, no booze, nothing.”

“So happy. I know it. I know, I know Dan, I know, I know you are. I know you’re one of us,” Paul said.

“I knew it as soon as we left and you said, ‘Let’s go get a beer.’

It comes as…

“It’s me, it’s fucking you. Don’t you think I wanted to? I don’t want to anymore because I know I don’t need it.

“We don’t need it. Look at us on the couch. We’re the best of ourselves.

“We are dynamic, fast, brilliant. We don’t need any of that.

“We are better, we are our best selves without it.

“It makes us weaker with it. It makes us smaller than what we were meant to be.”

Paul Danan’s final Instagram post was revealed just days before his tragic death at the age of 46

Daniel also spoke about his grief, talking about their close friendship and Paul’s profound influence on his life.

He told his followers: “I don’t normally comment on people leaving, but I really wanted to say a few words about Paul.

“Today I was upset when I heard that he passed away. He helped me and was so good to me. He was my friend.”

In the post, Daniel revealed how Paul supported him through his darkest times, even helping him admit his addiction problems.

He said: “Paul really helped change my life.

“People close to me obviously said I had a drinking problem at one time, but he was the first person to really label it and let me know what it was.

The pair bonded while rehearsing for a West End play in which they performed together, and Dapper shared one of their funniest memories.

He continued: “I’ll tell you a couple of funny things, when we were rehearsing for a show in the West End that we did together, we actually had to go to The Priory, for his rehab, he was in rehab, and we had to go to the Priory for try with him

“Every time I walked in, I’d yell, ‘Where’s the bar?’ He would get a hump, but then he would laugh because he had such a wicked sense of humor.”

Dapper also shared how Paul relied on him to help him get into character for his role.

He said: “He would come running into my dressing room saying, ‘Oh my God!’ He wanted to be a real jerk, so I’d tease him and he’d do it again.

Behind the title, Paul was a sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted man

Paul Danan may have grabbed his share of column inches in his all-too-brief 46 years, from his colorful love life to his well-documented struggles with addiction, but behind the headlines was a very sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted guy.

I have met and spoken to Paul many times over the years and have always had a soft spot for him. He was funny, articulate, smart and great company.

Yes, he had his demons, but he was very open about them and always strived to be a better version of himself.

He was extremely proud of his theater company, The Morning After, which he founded to help fellow addicts overcome their traumas through drama and acting.

Although he seemed lost at times, and on several occasions he spoke to me about his struggle to be taken seriously in the industry after his personal exploits overshadowed his professional achievements, he clearly found purpose in supporting others and helping them stay on track. recovery.

There was only one thing Paul was prouder of than his recovery and his theater company, and that was his son DeNiro.

Paul beamed when talking about his boy and looked forward to spending weekends with him as he co-parented with the boy’s mum.

His WhatsApp photo showed him beaming with DeNiro, and he loved talking about his offspring’s achievements and his hopes for his future.

It breaks my heart that DeNiro now has to live the rest of his life without his father and Paul will never see him grow up.

The last time I heard from Paul was at Christmas, when he left a voicemail saying he had some exciting things planned for 2025.

I told him we would catch up in the New Year, but unfortunately we never got the chance.

I will miss you Paul. You were one of the good ones in life.

“Once, last night, I messed with him and planted something stupid in his head just to cheer him up before he went on stage.”

Dapper described their shared struggles with mental health and addiction saying they both fought their own battles but “leaned on each other”.

He said: “When I finally admitted I had a problem and wanted to leave sober, Paul took me under his wing.

“He showed me the ropes and introduced me to meetings. He made the process a hell of a lot easier for me.”

Dapper admitted that Paul’s regular texts and quotes can become “annoying” but said he will miss him.

He said: “They were a bit annoying at the time, but now I think, ‘Too bad I’m not going to get those messages anymore. They were lovely.”

Dapper signed off with: “RIP Paul. I love you, buddy.”
