Paul Mescal Was Supposed to Wear a Wig in Gladiator II but He Couldn’t Get on Board: ‘I Don’t Have a Head for Wigs’

One thing was not allowed for Paul Mescal during the making Gladiator II.

The actor (28) recently sat with Wicked star Ariana Grande as part Diversity’with Actors in the series Actors, during which he revealed that he should have worn a wig for the film.

“Initially I decided when I first got the part – which was very naive – I was like, ‘I’m just going to cast a normal ‘Gladiator.’ ” Mescal explained. “As my body is, so is my body.”

He continued, “And then I thought, ‘That’s not the movie we’re making.’ So I went to the gym, but I hadn’t tried on the costumes yet, and when I put them on, I was like, ‘This is miles away from anything I’ve ever done.’ ”

The Normal People The star felt motivated by his transformation, saying, “I didn’t recognize my body in the clothes I was wearing, and it created a distance from who you feel the world expects you to be as a performer. That got me excited.”

But then there was the fitting of the wig, which he described as “crazy”.

“I’m not a fan of wigs,” he said. “They were big. And it had nothing to do with – we were working with the best hair/makeup team in the world. I just don’t have a head for wigs.”

The PEOPLE Man of the Year 2024 winner also highlighted the technical issue he would have if he wore a wig, saying he didn’t want to be interrupted while filming his choreography sequences so people would “come and fix things that fell behind my head.”

Mescal ended up expressing admiration for his costume. He said: “Seeing myself in costume was one of those moments where I thought, ‘I’m doing ‘Gladiator II.’ ”

In November, the actor recalled stripping in a hotel room with his trainer as he strengthened for his role as a warrior during an appearance in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“I had a coach called Tim Blakeley, who’s as big as a screen behind us, and he really looked after me,” he said.

Mescal went on to state that Blakeley visited him at his hotel and asked him to strip down to his underwear at the start of their training session.

“So I’m standing there in my underwear and he’s just circling me, and he’s basically just scientifically looking at my body,” Mescal said. “He comes back and there’s just this intense silence, and he just looks at me with his head down, and he says, ‘There’s a canvas here to work with.’ ”

Gladiator II follows Mescalo’s Lucius who is forced into the Colosseum after the Roman emperors conquer his home. Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal also star.

The hotly anticipated film is a sequel to the 2000s Gladiator starring Russell Crowe and returning director Ridley Scott.
