Paul Simon Gets Back in the Studio and Addresses ‘Good Friendship’ with Former Partner Art Garfunkel in Docu Trailer

A documentary about one of the greatest songwriters in history is coming soon.

In restless dreams: Music Paul Simon is an all-new, two-part docuseries about the legendary folk artist, 82, set to premiere on MGM+ on March 17th, with the second half arriving on March 24th. In anticipation of the upcoming release, the trailer was released on Wednesday.

Based on the trailer, the project helmed by Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney appears to be an honest look at Simon’s career spanning over six decades and his journey to creating his latest album, Seven Psalms.

The teaser features both archival footage of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on stage and in rehearsal, as well as contemporary footage illustrating his eagerness to return to the studio today.

“People said, ‘Oh, you’ve got your finger on the pulse.’ Now I don’t have my finger on the pulse. I just stretched out my finger and my pulse is weak,” says the Grammy winner at one point, looking back on his long career.

The documentary looks set to explore his friendship with Art Garfunkel, their time in Simon & Garfunkel and how their legendary songwriting partnership eventually unraveled and became contentious. Like old recordings of two plays, Graceland the artist’s voice says, “Artie, that was a good friendship. We thought we should express what our generation feels.”

Although the two broke up after their release in the 1970s A bridge over troubled waterwhich has been hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, Simon also talks about why he continued to make music and pursue a solo career after Simon & Garfunkel ended.

“What I’ve learned is that when you find something that produces a sense of peace or joy, try to hold on to it. It’s like bliss. That’s music for me,” he says in the trailer.

The documentary series shows how that enthusiasm continues to this day, while the musician describes how the idea for 2023. Seven Psalms came to him in his dream.

In restless dreams: The music of Paul Simon directed by Gibney, 70, who has made acclaimed, award-winning documentaries such as Inventor: In search of blood in Silicon Valley, Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, among others. He has also previously covered musicians such as James Brown (Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown) and Frank Sinatra (Sinatra: All or nothing).

Gibney’s portrayal of Ol’ Blue Eyes is ultimately what led him to make the Simon film, he explained to Deadline after the film’s premiere In restless dreams at the Toronto Film Festival last year.

“[Paul] came to me, he had seen a film about Sinatra and wondered if I might be interested in making a film about his entire career. And of course, I was interested in that,” said the director.

“But the gift was when he called me and said, ‘I’m recording a new album. Do you want to come watch me do it?’ And that was a gift because he was working on something in the present,” he continued. “I saw him working on it. And also because it’s a meditation on belief, life and death, it seemed appropriate to move back and forth in time to earlier moments in his career.”

After the release of the project, Simon revealed that he had lost most of the hearing in his left ear during the recording process.
