Lily Gladstone is taking advice from a seasoned pro to get through this year’s busy Oscars season.
In an exclusive interview for PEOPLE’s annual Oscar portfolio, the 37-year-old Flower Moon Star Killers — who is nominated for her first Academy Award for the Martin Scorsese film — reveals that veteran actress Cate Blanchett has given her some tips on how to survive the hectic time leading up to the big night on March 10.
“Her big tip was to keep up with your adaptogenic mushrooms throughout this period, which is great advice,” Gladstone recalls. “It’s like, okay, it’s a very quick, easy self-care ritual that I can adapt, and it’s coming from one of the most brilliant, brilliant actors in the world.”
She adds that two-time Oscar winner Blanchett, 54, shared the proposal with her during one of the occasions when they met during this year’s awards ceremony – and admits that Tar the star’s advice surprised her.
“You grow up idolizing someone’s career and their acting, and you think it’s going to be a little tip about how to stay present or how to really commit to a cause or some acting advice,” she explains.

Gladstone, who says she has “idolized” Blanchett since she was a teenager, still remembers her disappointment when the Australian star didn’t take home an Oscar in 1999 for her portrayal of Elizabeth I. Elizabeth. (The Best Actress award went to Gwyneth Paltrow instead Shakespeare in love.)
“I remember being very, very upset about it. She’s my best actress. I think she’s a great talent of this generation,” she says, adding that Blanchett was “so kind” to her amid her Hollywood breakthrough.
In addition to relying on Blanchett’s mushroom advice, Gladstone tells PEOPLE that on Oscar night, she’ll have a few lucky charms to help with her anticipation and nerves at the ceremony.

The two women spoke privately after Gladstone won a Golden Globe in January. (Haaland is the first Indian woman to serve as a cabinet secretary.)

“I got to sit down with Deb Haaland and she’s just crying about that win,” she recalls, referring to her Golden Globe trophy for best actress in a motion picture – drama. “She gave me several pairs of earrings. She gave me chocolates. She gave me her coin.”
Gladstone will also bring Wilma Mankiller Quarter and newly minted Maria Tallchief Quarter, featuring the Native American prima ballerina who has been breaking barriers on and off the stage.
“So all these coins that I’m collecting about these first pioneer icons, the real matriarchs, the real indigenous matriarchs who are just opening doors for their areas,” she explains. “Well yeah, I like to carry a little piece of each of them with me.”
The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 10, from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, beginning at 7:00 PM ET.
