Paula Abdul Praises Ariana Grande for ‘Cold Hearted’ References in New ‘Yes, And?’ Video: ‘What an Honor!’

Ariana Grande instructs listeners to “say it with your chest” in her new single “Yes, And?” — and Paula Abdul did just that after watching the video for the song on Friday.

Abdul, 61, excitedly praised the 30-year-old pop star as she interjected “Yeah, and?” music video with references from her 1989 music video for “Cold Hearted,” which was released four years before Grande was born.

“WOW! Waking up to Ariana Grande paying tribute to ‘Cold Hearted’ in her new music video ‘yes, and?’ it was EVERYTHING!!!” Abdul wrote on X (earlier Twitter) and Instagram. “What an honor! What was your favorite part of the video? I love you, Ari!!!”

“I love you too, sweetest queen! 🥺🥹,” Grande responded in a comment on Instagram. “thank you for your brilliance and for endlessly inspiring me (and so many people)!”

Christian Breslauer, “Yes, and?” director, also left a comment: “One of my favorite videos of all time. We hope we did it justice in your eyes ❤️”

As fans initially pointed out on the morning of January 12th, Grande’s video has a similar plot, setting and hat seen in Abdul’s “Cold Hearted”. A few hours later, Abdul drove the point home with a side-by-side video comparison in her Instagram post.

Both pop stars wear papillon hats and dance to Bob Fosse-inspired choreography in their videos.

In the field “Yes, and?” video, Grande invites critics to watch her perform the song, which is the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album.

In “Cold Hearted,” Abdul invites judgmental record company executives to his rehearsals. Both performances leave guests confused but impressed.

While Abdul has primarily stayed away from CEOs, Grande cuts through her critics during the song’s bridge, unleashing lyrics that seem to address some recent life experiences.

“Don’t comment on my body, don’t answer,” Grande sings. “Your work is yours and mine is mine. Why do you care so much whose? [d—] I’m driving?”
