Pavan Malhotra started his film career as an assistant in the costume department of the English film Gandhi (1982). He later worked as a production assistant on several Bollywood films, including “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” (1983), “Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!” (1984) and “Kamoshi” (1985).
He made his debut as an actor in the Hindi film industry with the film “Ab Ayega Mazaa” (1984), in which he played the role of Mukti. He gained great popularity after playing the role of Ghunuram in the Indian Bengali film Bagh Bahadur (1989) directed by Buddhadev Dasgupta. The film is based on a short story written by Bengali writer Prafulla Roy.
In 1989, he played the protagonist Salim in the movie “Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro”.
