In 2014, Hero Motorcycle Company and its senior executives were involved in a criminal case of fraud, forgery, and conspiracy. The case was filed following a Delhi court order. Senior officials of Hero Motocorp, including Pawan Munjal, have been accused of conspiring to unfairly terminate contracts with the two-wheeler maker’s labor providers.

In March 2022, the Income Tax department raided Hero Motorcorp’s office and Munjal’s residence for alleged tax evasion.

In August 2023, the Enforcement Directorate raided the home of Hero MotoCorp Chairman Pawan Munjal in connection with a money laundering case. Affected by this news, the company’s stock price fell 3%. Before this event, the stock had reached its 52-week high, touching Rs. On August 1, 2023, the BSE price was 3,242.85 per person.
Hero MotoCorp vs Brains Logistics
An FIR was registered against Munjal and other employees of Hero MotoCorp on October 5, 2023, at Vasant Kunj North Police Station in New Delhi. The case was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 463 (Forgery), Section 467 (Forgery of securities, wills), Section 468 (Forgery with intent to cheat), Section Sections 471 (Using forged documents as authentic), 34 (Common intention), 477A (False accounts), 120B (Punishment for criminal conspiracy) and 406 (Penalty for criminal breach of trust). The charges relate to the creation of false billings and false debit balances in the company’s financial records and involve Brains Logistics. According to the complainant, Hero MotoCorp produced false bills totaling Rs 5.90 lakh against Brains Logistics in 2009 and 2010. On October 12, 2023, the Delhi High Court stayed the criminal proceedings against Munjal and others in the case. Hero MotoCorp shares fell 2.75% after the lawsuit was filed against Munjal.
Confiscation of property
Munjal found itself embroiled in controversy in November 2023 when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized his properties worth around Rs 10 lakh. The amount involved in the money laundering case is Rs 249.5 crore. Delhi carried out the seizure under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, following prosecution by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The complaint alleged that Munjal was involved in illegal export of foreign exchange/currency from India.
