She attended St. Paul’s Missionary School in Kolkata and then went on to pursue a B.A. in Political Science from the Scottish Church College, Kolkata. Later, she pursued a Diploma in Fashion Technology. She moved from Kolkata to Mumbai around 2007 to pursue an acting career. She also pursued acting courses at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Academy of Acting in Mumbai.

On December 1, 2023, Payal Gosh claimed on social media that she had been dating Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan for five years. According to her, she started dating him in 2011; however, they later broke up. In September 2020, Payal Ghosh accused renowned Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap of sexual harassment. According to reports, in 2013, Payal visited Anurag’s home in Versova, Mumbai, where the alleged incident took place when Anurag Kashyap suddenly stripped in front of her while showing the actress around the house. In an interview with Times of India, she also claimed that Kashyap told her that Bollywood actresses like Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadda and Mahie Gill often had such sexual encounters with him. Humiliated, Payal politely declined the offer, pleading that she was unwell, and immediately left the house. Anurag Kashyap refuted the allegations of sexual assault through a series of tweets. He took up the matter legally by providing documents as evidence to prove that he was shooting in Sri Lanka during the timeframe that Payal claimed the alleged incident took place. In October 2020, Bollywood celebrity Richa Chadha filed a defamation suit against Payal Ghosh in the Bombay High Court, accusing him of unnecessarily involving Chadha’s name in the allegations against Kashyap. In August 2023, she discussed the matter and said that she was facing Kashyap’s influence in the industry alone, pointing out that few people were willing to stand up against him. She said,
I’m not the richest or most powerful person, so I don’t even expect people to stand up for me against him. I’m fighting alone, and I know it will be the same in the future. No one will stand up for me against him. Everyone values their relationship with him because he’s a movie director.”

- Payal used to smoke regularly. In February 2019, Payal quit smoking and started practicing yoga for her upcoming film. It was her yoga instructor who suggested her to quit smoking.

- During her teenage years, Payal was widely admired for her involvement in various extracurricular activities such as stage performances and plays. Born into a conservative family, her father was against her taking up an acting career. At the age of 17, she fled from Kolkata to Mumbai to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an actress. After moving to Mumbai, she lived with her eldest sister for a while and modeled in some advertisements for Tata Indicom and Docomo.
- On October 26, 2020, Payal joined the Republican Party of India (Athawale), which is led by Union Minister Ramdas Athawale. She was elected as the vice-chairman of the women’s wing of the party. While welcoming Ms. Ghosh to the party, Athawale said,
