According to the indictment, Gendron may have targeted the grocery store, particularly because it is known to serve a large number of African-American consumers. He is facing ten counts of a deadly hate crime and one count of a hate crime for allegedly attacking black people in and near his work. In addition to the hate crime charge, he faces 13 gun charges.
Is Payton Gendron a white racist?
Police discovered a political manifesto in which Payton Gendron proclaimed his support for the far right. The self-proclaimed white nationalist also believes that Caucasians are facing genocide at the hands of minorities. According to the official charge, Gendron’s expressed belief in the possibility of genocide against whites drove him to commit the massacre. It is stated:
“Gendron’s motivation for mass murder was to prevent blacks from replacing whites and exterminating the white race, as well as to encourage others to commit similar crimes.”
Garland acknowledged that investigators had linked Payton Gendron to white nationalists, saying:
“The Department of Justice fully understands the danger that white nationalist violence poses to American security and democracy.”
The lawyer continued:
We will remain steadfast in our efforts to stop hate crimes, protect the communities traumatized by them and hold those who commit them accountable.”
Authorities say Gendron wrote racist messages on his weapon, including “Here’s your compensation!” The arrest document also includes more evidence that the kid was involved in white nationalism.
According to the affidavit, the attacker wrote in his manifesto:
“(I must) carry out this attack because I am concerned about the survival of the white race.”
A decision on whether Gendron will receive the death penalty will be made at an unspecified date. According to the defendant’s lawyer, the decision on whether to enforce it could take up to a year.
