Pedro Pascal Teases ‘Incredible’ Season 2 of The Last of Us

Pedro Pascal feels all the emotions when he re-enters Joel’s skin.

After winning Best Actor in a Drama Series at the 2024 SAG Awards on Saturday, Pascal, 48, teased what’s next for season two of his breakout HBO hit The last of us.

“Filming is going amazing,” he told reporters, including PEOPLE in the virtual press room. “It’s kind of amazing, the kind of focus and dedication that everyone has in Season 2.”

“Craig Mazin and Bella Ramsey are a guide and guidance for me like I have never experienced before. So it’s amazing to be back with them,” he continued of the team behind the show, including its co-creator Mazin, 52, and his co-star Ramsey, 20, who plays Ellie.

“Everyone, our entire team, is working harder than I can imagine, even harder than our first season – which is almost impossible,” added Pascal, who said the award he just accepted for his role in the series was “because of them”, referring to the entire production team.

Pascal — who was just announced as part of the all-star ensemble in the Fantastic Four with Vanessa Kirby, Bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Stranger Things‘ Joseph Quinn — continued to rave about his experience on set The last of us while thinking about a new meal.

“When I go back to Season 2 and put those boots back on, they feel like they’re brand new. I’ve never done anything like it before that has original authorship and then to be given the space and author of what I have to give…. Being with Craig Mazin and Bella Ramsey is what works for me.”

Pascal admitted onstage at the SAG Awards after winning his category that he was “a little drunk,” alluding to his disbelief that he beat out his fellow nominees, who included Successions Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen, as well Morning showis Billy Crudup.

“Thank you, HBO, for… Jesus, Louise, I’m making a fool of myself. But thank you so much for this!”

After calling the award an “incredible fucking honour”, Pascal tearfully thanked several colleagues and his family, before sincerely ending his speech by saying: “I’m going to have a panic attack and I’m going to leave .”

Ramsey was also in the running for an award at SAG for her portrayal of Ellie, a 14-year-old girl whom Pascal’s character is on a mission to hand over to scientists in the hopes that she can save the post-apocalyptic world.

Pascal and Culkin, 41, also sparked a hilarious fake beef that began at the Golden Globes when Succession star defeated Pascal and jokingly told him to “suck him” during his acceptance speech.

The following week at the Emmys, Pascal was on stage to present the award and took the moment to rant about Culkin, joking that the actor “beat him up f—” and that was the reason behind his thong.

After his win at Saturday’s SAG Awards, Pascal once again addressed the rivalry, telling Tan France backstage: “I’m going to kiss Kieran tonight. That will be my revenge.”

“He’s the greatest,” Pascal said of Culkin. “I remember, actually, years and years of him taking one of my younger siblings to FAO Schwarz in Manhattan and me playing a show at Second Sage. … He came up to me and praised me for the game.”
