Peepal Baba is an Indian environmentalist known for planting more than a million trees with his team in different states of India. He is the founder of the environmental organization Give Me a Tree.

Journey to become Bodhi Baba

While studying in school, he was inspired by his teacher’s words to plant trees. His teacher once said,

One person needs to plant at least 20 trees to reverse the damage to the environment. I initially planted four Neem trees and then six Bodhi trees. “

During his childhood, his maternal grandmother often taught him the importance of trees to humans. Inspired by his teachers and grandmother, he planted his first tree on January 26, 1977, at Range Hills Road, Kirkee Military Station, Pune, Maharashtra.

Soon, his hobby of planting trees turned into his passion. Later, he decided to involve more people in his environmental protection plan. He then started a hobby club called Gimme a Tree. Initially, he often asked family, friends, classmates and passers-by to plant trees and water them.

Gradually, more and more people started joining his hobby club. His hobby club later became a long-term trust dedicated to protecting the environment. Pipal Baba’s trust also contributed to the restoration of the land. The Give Me Trees Trust has over 11,000 volunteers working to protect tree seedlings planted in various public and private sites.

The trust also organizes various environmental awareness events in schools and colleges. Peepal Baba is also committed to promoting organic farming. His trust has planted more than 1.25 million trees across Indian states. Some of the trees he commissioned include Banyan, Pilkhan, Jamun, Mango, Neem, Sheesham and Babool. Gimme Tree is considered one of the largest voluntary tree planting campaigns in India.
