A favorite rom-com moment just got a new spin.
The first part of BridgertonThe third season debuted on Netflix on Thursday, May 16, and mainly focuses on Penelope Featherington’s (Nicola Coughlin) love story with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
A key part of Penelope’s story this season is her transformation from a beauty to a confident young woman. Achieving that big makeover moment was possible in part thanks to the legendary 90s rom-com She is all that.

Showrunner Jess Brownell was clearly inspired She is all that the scene where Laney Boggs, played by Rachael Leigh Cook, descends the stairs to her waiting friend Zack (Freddie Prince Jr.), transformed after her own makeover.

“There’s this iconic moment where Rachel Leigh Cook walks down the stairs; she takes off her glasses, puts on a red dress, and suddenly she’s instantly popular and beautiful,” Brownell said. First for women.
“We felt that for a modern audience we had to do something different with it,” Brownell explained of Penelope’s big party entrance after her style change. “So Pen has her makeover… but it doesn’t necessarily have the effect she thought it would. Because the change that needs to happen has a lot more to do with her confidence than her outward appearance.”

Despite her new clothes and hairstyle, Penelope struggles with her ability to hold a conversation with potential suitors. Colin then steps in to help Penelope find a husband, teaching her how to talk to other men and impress them with her natural charm. While the new season is mostly focused on the romance between Colin and Penelope, fans also get a chance to see Penelope “being a butterfly coming out of her chrysalis this season,” Brownell said in a behind-the-scenes feature on Shondaland Bridgerton season 3

In general, Brownwell said that for the new season, she “also drew a lot from movies that came out when I was a teenager, because of nostalgia, like 10 things i hate about you She is all thatand without knowledge” according to Shondaland.
Everything points to a changed tone and intent this season: “more romance, more playfulness, more humor,” the showrunner told the Royal Television Society.
