Pennsylvania Officials Declare 2023 as the 'Taylor Swift Era' in the Singer's Home State

The resolution was approved by a 103-100 vote on Wednesday, Swift’s 34th birthday

2023 was the year of Taylor Swift — and Pennsylvania is celebrating her for it.

On Wednesday, which also happened to be the star’s 34th birthday, Pennsylvania lawmakers approved a resolution recognizing 2023 as the age of Taylor Swift in her home state.

The resolution, which passed 103-100, was introduced by Reps. Danielle Friel Otten, Jennifer O’Mara, Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, Robert Freeman, Benjamin V. Sanchez, Arvind Venkat, Jose Giral and Maureen E. Madden.

The resolution states that Swift has “transcended the role of a pop star,” the Associated Press reports. It also acknowledges her achievements over the past year, such as being named TIME’s Person of the Year, and says she “shines as a role model of courage, self-acceptance and self-determination, persevering in the face of personal and professional obstacles and challenges. ”

Democratic Rep. Maureen Madden of Monroe County was a strong supporter of the measure and expressed her appreciation for the singer’s influence on younger generations.

“I’m turning 64 today and I’m thinking about who will carry on our legacy. She’s not popular because she writes breakup songs,” Madden said on the House floor, according to the media release. “She’s popular because the largest voting demographic, the 18-24 demographic, listens and does what she says.”

Although Swift left the Keystone State when she was a teenager to pursue her musical dreams in Nashville, she included references to Pennsylvania in songs like “Gold Rush,” “Seven” and “Christmas Tree Farm.”
