Dior Goodjohn, an actress who recently starred in Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Clarisse, she’s ready to show fans what her voice can do.

On Friday, Goodjohn gave her Diordom something to cheer about with the release of her debut single, “Focus.” In light of the release, the singer and actress opened up about the song’s inspiration and her musical endeavor.

“[“Focus”] it’s about finding someone you click with who brings you peace and makes you feel special — so special that you’re willing to do whatever it takes to make things perfect and private,” Goodjohn, 17, tells PEOPLE via email. “Hence the lyrics ‘focus it on me’ — don’t focus on the outside noise, just focus all your energy on me.”

On “Focus,” Goodjohn’s soulful vocals combine with raw emotion — and she hopes her lyrics can “turn words into feeling.”

“I want to give people an outlet for emotions they’re not sure how to fully express,” she says.
