Peter Flavel Controversy
Here’s Peter Flavel’s summary of the Nigel Farage account closure controversy:
- In July 2023, Coutts closed an account belonging to Nigel Farage, the former leader of the UK Independence Party.
- The bank said it closed the account because Farage’s political views were not in line with its values.
- Farage accused the bank of political bias and said he was considering legal action.
- The controversy led to the resignation of Coutts chief executive Peter Flavel.
Along with the issue of closing Nigel Farage’s accounts, Flavel has also come under fire for the way he managed the bank’s finances. While Flavel was at the helm, Coutts’ profits fell and the share price fell.
For the bank, Flavel’s resignation as CEO of Coutts was a significant step backwards. He was well-liked in the financial sector and had a proven track record as a corporate leader. His resignation raised uncertainty about Coutts’ future and ability to compete in the global banking market.
