Peter Murrell’s career

In 1999 Murrell succeeded Michael Russell as chief executive of the Scottish National Party. Former SNP attorney general Kenny MacAskill pressured Murrell to resign in January 2019. Murdo Fraser, a member of the committee, denounced Murrell to the Lord Advocate after Murrell’s hearing into his handling of harassment allegations by from the Scottish government in December 2020, alleging that Murrell made a “false statement” under oath during his deposition. The charge was “completely dismissed,” according to Murrell.

Murrell is being questioned by party members about the alleged loss of £600,000 in party funds. Authorities in Scotland are currently investigating a fraud claim in relation to $600,000 that was allegedly stolen. According to a June 2021 article in The Scotsman, Police Scotland summoned Murrell to investigate a payment made to the SNP by lottery winners Colin and Christine Weir, which they subsequently attempted to repay.

Scottish Labor and Conservatives questioned Murrell over a £107,620 interest-free loan given to the SNP on 20 June 2021, which was not disclosed to the Electoral Commission more than a year after the July 2021 deadline. The SNP responded that it did not report the loan because it did not believe it was a problem that should be reported. The money was given to a party to help solve a cash flow problem.

news from peter murrell

Peter Murrell, former head of the SNP, was questioned in connection with an investigation into the party’s finances and was later released without charge. After his arrest on Wednesday, Murrell, 58, the husband of former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon, spent more than 12 hours in police custody.

When her husband was taken into custody, Ms Sturgeon said in a statement that she had “no prior knowledge of Police Scotland’s actions or intentions”. However, she promised to “fully cooperate” with the authorities if necessary.

Wednesday’s arrest was linked to a lengthy police investigation into how some £600,000 earmarked for the Scottish independence campaign was spent. Following a scandal over false information given to journalists about the SNP’s membership, Murrell resigned as the party’s chief executive last month. Just weeks before, Mrs. Sturgeon had announced her resignation as First Minister of Scotland.
