Peter Sarsgaard Confirms He Won't Return for Presumed Innocent Season 2, Says He's 'Not Really Interested in Sequels'

He is presumed innocent ended with a not guilty verdict for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich, and Peter Sargaard is ready to hang up his hat about his time as a (fictional) prosecutor in Chicago.

Despite the Apple TV+ series being renewed for a second season — which will focus on a “thrilling, brand new case” — the actor told IndieWire that he’s “not really interested in sequels,” seemingly hinting that he won’t be a part of Season 2.

“I think I’ve only done one season of anything. I think I’m a one-season person,” Sarsgaard, who played Deputy District Attorney Tommy Molt in the case against Rusty, accused of murdering his colleague and lover Carolyn (Renate Reinsve), said for the newspaper.

The 53-year-old said he has become “very good at greeting and saying goodbye” during his career, and is happy with how things have gone so far.

“There is something very valuable about forgiveness because then you have to look for another source of inspiration and then you change. I get asked all the time ‘Did I gain weight? Lose weight? Grow a beard?’ I kind of do it all the time,” he said. “If I were to play something over and over again, I’d have to keep coming back to the same territory. I’ve actually found that acting is really valuable in terms of being a person, and I think part of that is I’ve had all these really interesting experiences, not just playing different characters, but also by collaborating with different people.”

When it comes to his He is presumed innocent specifically about the character, Sarsgaard told the news outlet that he feels like audiences have misunderstood Tommy Molt. “For me, I’m not a villain in that. I’m just a guy who lives alone. I play a decent person in it,” he said. “And actually during the run He is presumed innocent, at one point I did a Q&A and someone said, ‘How are you so creepy?’ and those things, and I’m really against it.”

While he may not be returning to the role, working on the Apple TV+ series — based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel and previously adapted into a film starring Harrison Ford — was a fun experience for Sarsgaard as he got to work with his brother – father-in-law.

On Today show in June, Gyllenhaal, 43, said Sarsgaard, who is married to his sister Maggie, “requires honesty not only as a brother, but especially as an actor.”

“I love working with Peter,” Gyllenhaal said. “You just know you’re working with someone who’s up for anything and it’s like a joy.”

Sarsgaard said that despite their characters being enemies on screen, acting alongside such a familiar face was rewarding.

“For two characters who also have an antagonistic relationship, it’s nice that underneath — I think what you feel is that people only fight like that if they care about each other on some level,” he said. “And it just existed throughout [time].”
