PewDiePie Is Facing Backlash After He Made His Remark About Scarlet May

PewDiePie is facing massive outrage on social media after he allegedly mocked a deaf TikToker in his recent video. Since then, the inventor has been constantly criticized on Twitter and called out for being able-bodied as people try to call him off.

The Swedish YouTuber is one of the most popular video producers on the platform. In his latest video titled – My Dog Gets Goosebumps on TikToks, the 32-year-old responds to videos that make him get goosebumps with his dog Maya. PewDiePie responds to TikTok founder Scarlet May’s video in one of many videos. The 21-year-old influencer can be seen in the video recounting a hilarious interaction at a fast food restaurant. She is shown explaining the incident with her long silver acrylic nails while using sign language.

The YouTuber pauses the video while watching it and says:

“I’m not paying attention. Maya, look at her wild nails!”

He then holds his dog’s paws in both hands and waves them, clearly mocking TikTokers’ American Sign Language. He also says:

“Excuse me, do my nails bother you?”

May’s video became popular when PewDiePie’s response to her TikTok video went viral. She also addressed the clip in a TikTok video on Wednesday, captioning it:

“I hope they learn something from this because we all make mistakes.”

She answered the questions people were probably asking her during the video. She mentioned:

“How do I feel? I thought it was weird and unnecessary, but I’m not shocked because I’m used to it. It was a big issue in the deaf world that I was trying to normalize and bring to light: using nails while signing is normal and acceptable. But then here comes a great creative and takes us a million steps back, which is incredibly aggravating.”

The 21-year-old went on to say that if someone had told a story with long nails without having to sign, they wouldn’t have mocked him, and continued:

“But since I have long fingernails and had to sign to communicate, he stopped the video after two seconds and didn’t even listen to the story, then proceeded to make fun of me with his dog.”

May also addressed the YouTuber directly, saying he had no right to “simply insult deaf people who have been struggling for years”.
