Pharrell Williams Reveals the Relatable Skincare Routine That Keeps Him Looking So Young at 51 (Exclusive)

Producer and music artist Pharrell Williams has been scoring big hits with superstars like Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani, as well as himself (2013 Oscar-nominated chart-topper “Happy”) since the turn of the century.

But while he’s highly regarded as an innovative force in music, Pharrell, 51, is also well known for something even deeper: staying eternally young. He has barely aged in a decade, and the secret to his youthful vision is simple. In other words, feel free to try it at home.

“Believe it or not, exfoliation, man,” the 13-time Grammy winner tells PEOPLE. “Exfoliation is the key.”

So is it really that simple? Well, not really. There is actually another ingredient for it that helps you look forever young.

“Now, here is routine, and you can find them online, but I think probably the most active part of all is… No, it’s two. It’s peeling, but it’s also here,” he says, pointing to his heart.

“It’s literally here. That inner child, don’t ever shut it up. Don’t ever [go]’Oh, I can’t take it anymore.’ Not. That’s why you should absolutely do it right now. People who want to put you in a box? They tried to do it to me too, and here we are.”

Pharrell’s acclaimed new documentary, Piece by piecedirected by Morgan Neville (20 feet from the stars, Won’t you be my neighbor?) and in theaters on October 11th, it definitely doesn’t fit into any existing box. Instead of making standards Behind the musicin film style, he decided to build his documentary, as the title suggests, piece by piece, telling the whole story with animated LEGO characters.

Six or seven years ago when an agent suggested he make a documentary, Pharrell wasn’t really interested. Then his agent had another idea: “He said, ‘Why don’t you just take a look [Lady] Gaga one [2017’s Gaga: Five Foot Two]? I mean, look how she did it.’ I said, ‘Okay, great.’ And I saw him, and that was one of the things that impressed me the most when I saw him. I said, ‘Oh, I saw her fingerprints all over the place’.”

Pharrell had only two conditions. The first: “I thought, ‘But I want to do it with Morgan Neville,’ because he did it 20 feet from the starsand he just did Mr. Rogers [documentary]which was crazy,” Pharrell recalls. “And I was like, ‘Man, I can’t believe I’m working with the same guy.’ ”

Second condition: “I said, ‘But I want to do it in LEGO.’ ”

Instead of making his A-list friends just sit around and talk about how much he influenced and changed the sonic landscape of the music industry, he came up with an animated documentary featuring everyone, including himself, as LEGO characters. Yes, Timberlake, Stefani, JAY-Z, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and more appear in the form of custom LEGOs.

But why LEGO? “Well, that’s what I always played with when I was young,” Pharrell explains. “I would get that for Christmas. And when then [he and wife Helen Lasichanh] had our first [child]Rocket, I would always send him little LEGO sets or whatever and pick them up from different places around the world.”

“And then around that time [that he started thinking about the documentary]we just had triplets and I knew I wanted the triplets to hear and understand my story as well. So it all made sense. You know what I mean? I wanted it so they could see dad tell his story.”
