Phil Castellini’s Latest News
Phil Castellini, president, and CEO of the Cincinnati Reds, has once again outraged his own fanbase with statements he made about the organization.
Castellini, the son of owner Bob Castellini, not only inserted his foot but his entire leg, into his mouth. And this isn’t the first time the younger Castellini has spoken out against the organization in front of its supporters.
Cincinnati Reds president Phil Castellini has been criticized yet again for comments attacking the franchise.
He made news last April after a local radio interview in which he lashed out at unhappy Reds fans who were pleading with the Castellinis to sell the team.
“Well, where are you going?” he said. Let’s begin there. I mean, who are you selling the team to? That’s the other issue, I mean, do you want to have this debate? If you want to look at the things you would have this team do to make it more profitable, generate more money, and compete more in the existing economic system in which this game exists, you would take it up and move it somewhere else.
As a result, be cautious about what you ask for. I believe we are doing the best we can with the resources we have.” Needless to say, Reds supporters were outraged, and it took Phil more than a month to apologize—he published a statement at the end of May.
Fast forward to January 2023, when Castellini, speaking at an annual Reds supporters’ lunch, not only didn’t learn his lesson from a year ago, but he doubled down and outraged Reds fans even more.
Castellini delivered a speech in front of the Rosie Reds—a booster group created in 1964 and whose acronym stands for Rooters Organised to Stimulate Interest and Enthusiasm—that appeared to be Castellini worrying about owning and managing a baseball team in the 2020s.
He brought up the existing baseball economic framework once more, and it appeared that his purpose was to persuade Reds fans to agree that running a small market Major League Baseball organization in 2023 must be difficult.
Things took a turn when the presentation included a slide labeled, ‘Clubs out of contention by Opening Day,’ which was a chart showing how many clubs began the season with little chance of making the playoffs since 2019. Which team is Phil referring to? You guessed correctly. His personal Cincinnati Reds.
