Jackson went to high school in Williston, North Dakota, where he played basketball on the varsity team and helped his squad win the state championship. He also participated in track and field events, pitched for the baseball team, and played football. He currently has a sports complex named after him at the high school. Years later, his brother Chuck theorised that the three Jackson sons were so fervently involved in sports because it was the only time they were permitted to engage in activities that other kids were participating in. Jackson caught the eye of numerous baseball scouts. Their notes were discovered by Bill Fitch, a future NBA coach who had previously taught baseball and was serving as a scout for the Atlanta Braves. Jackson was in his sophomore year of high school when Fitch took over as the University of North Dakota’s head basketball coach in the spring of 1962.

Jackson was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at the University of North Dakota when Bill Fitch was able to successfully recruit him there. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Jackson performed admirably there, aiding the Fighting Sioux to third- and fourth-place finishes in the NCAA Division II tournament (1965 and 1966). They were defeated by the Southern Illinois Salukis in both seasons.

The New York Knicks selected Jackson in the second round of the 1967 NBA Draft. He was a good all-around athlete with extremely long arms, but his offensive potential was restricted. On the other hand, his intelligence and diligence on defence made up for this. Despite getting relatively little playing time, Jackson eventually became a fan favourite and one of the NBA’s top backup players.

He retired as a player after the 1979–80 NBA season after crossing the Hudson to play two seasons for the New Jersey Nets.
