Who is Felipe Marshall?

Philip Marshall, the organist, composer, conductor, teacher, and judge who has passed away at 84, contributed to music in ways that went far beyond the local organ style. He spent his formative years in Alford, Lincolnshire, where he was born in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

His outstanding musical abilities were recognized in 1946 when, after time serving in the Royal Army Corps during the war, he was elected to the Royal College of Organists by examination. In the same year he was appointed director of music at Keighley Boys Grammar School and began playing the organ at All Souls Church on Haley Hill in Halifax.

In 1951, the year he went to Boston, Lincolnshire, and took an external degree from Durham University, he married Margaret Bradbury, whom he had met there. dr. Marshall, who became one in 1955, played a key role in the musical life of the neighborhood as the organist for St. Botolph and a music teacher at the school.

When he moved to Ripon Cathedral, he continued this by establishing the Cathedral Choir School in 1960. He moved to Lincoln Cathedral in 1966, where he raised cultural standards locally and internationally for 20 years. In addition to his administrative duties, he directed the Lincoln Music Society, taught for the Workers’ Educational Association, and started the Three Choir Festival in 1982. He also taught at the Cathedral School.

Marshall loved the organ music of late 19th and early 20th century Britain. His talent for improvisation and his subtle skills as an accompanist reveal his love of color. He was a rigorous choral technician who, despite being modest in his praise, managed to maintain the highest standards.

His understanding of the liturgy as a musician made him a skilled writer for voices. His numerous religious compositions were more than matched by well-known and lyrical instrumental works, including the outstanding Concerto for Piano and Orchestra.

After retiring in 1986, Marshall devoted more time to his hobbies, which included calligraphy, steam trains, cats, and all things mechanical. One of the last custodians of the great English tradition, this humble man had a deep respect for ancient Anglican customs.
