Piara Powar Career

Mir initially featured in an episode of Gordon Kennedy’s 1992 BBC Scotland programme The Insiders, whose sister Uzma was already employed there. She worked as a trainee for Scottish Television after graduating, reading the early-morning news bulletins and eventually hosting the main news programme.

In 1996, she hosted a few episodes of BBC Two’s East Asian documentary series and a few segments on Desi DNA. She started working as a reporter for Central Television in Nottingham in 1998.

She also hosted the Channel 4 and BBC Two shows Just Write and Around Scotland, respectively. She reviewed newspapers on GMTV in 2010 alongside Lorraine and Lorraine. In 1999, Mir relocated to London to work as a producer for BBC Radio London and began filling in as a freelance newsreader for BBC Radio 5 Live. In July 2001, she started working there full-time.

Between Sonia Deol’s departure and Anita Rani’s appointment as host of the BBC Asian Network’s weekday morning ph one-in programme in April 2006, she filled in for a fortnight. She has provided commentary for BBC Asian Network Report segments.

Up until January 9th, 2009, Mir hosted the Midday News on 5 Live, Monday through Friday. She hosted a few Friday editions of Good Morning Scotland in 2009. She also hosted Colour Me White for Radio 4 and Gay Life After Saddam for Radio 5 Live in 2009, as well as other shows for BBC Radio 4 on Scotland’s Year of Homecoming.

She took Anita Anand’s place as host of Radio 5 Live’s Drive programme in 2010. She filled in for Jeremy Vine for one week in March 2012 on his BBC Radio 2 show. After 11 years with BBC 5 Live, Mir announced on Twitter on September 27, 2012, that she would be leaving the network. On November 9, 2012, Mir performed her final five Live Drives.

On October 29, 2012, Mir hosted a segment of Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4 and temporarily took Julia Hartley-Brewer’s position on the LBC 97.3 afternoon show. She co-hosted BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live from 2012 to 2020.

She was confirmed in April 2020 as a broadcaster for Times Radio when the station opened on June 29, 2020. She co-hosts breakfast with Stig Abell every Monday through Thursday.
