McNally, who played Joshamee Gibbs – the first mate of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow – in all five Pirates films, was released on £40,000 bail and is due to appear in court next month.

He is married to Bafta-winning actress Phyllis Logan, but police have refused to release details of his alleged victim, citing confidentiality rules.

At her family home in Chiswick, west London, Phyllis denied knowledge of his arrest yesterday.

McNally appeared in Downton Abbey with Scottish-born Phyllis, who played housekeeper Mrs Hughes.

They had a son, David, in 1996, and got married in 2011.

In 2021, he defended his Pirates co-star Depp (60) when he was accused of beating up his ex-actress Amber Heard.

He said: “I never saw a hint of a dark side in him.

“I see a great humanitarian and a wonderful human being. I don’t see any obstacle to him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow.”

McNally, arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, was due to appear at the Dr Who fan convention Gallifrey One at the Marriott Hotel in LA the following day.

Organizers announced on social media that he would not appear, but only told fans that it was for personal reasons.

McNally appeared in the BBC sci-fi favorite in 1984 and again in 2021.

LA police said the Bristol-born actor was being held on suspicion of causing injury causing a traumatic condition to a victim who was his current or former spouse, roommate or parent of a child.

His agent was asked for comment.

How you can get help

Women’s Aid has the following advice for victims and their families:

  • Always keep your phone nearby.
  • Get in touch with charities for help, including the Women’s Aid live chat helpline and services such as SupportLine.
  • If you are in danger, call 999.
  • Learn about the silent solution, by reporting abuse without speaking into the handset, instead of dialing “55”.
  • Always have some cash with you, including change for a payphone or bus ticket.
  • If you suspect that your partner is about to attack you, try to go to a less risky part of the house – for example, where there is an exit and access to a telephone.
  • Avoid the kitchen and garage, where knives or other weapons are likely to be found. Avoid rooms where you could become trapped, such as a bathroom or where you could be locked in a closet or other small space.
