A PILOT has died after his plane crashed on a rural industrial estate, sparking a fire.

Authorities are investigating why the light aircraft crashed, while roads in the area are closed.

Police, paramedics and firefighters converged on a property in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, after residents reported a low-speed aircraft before crashing into the ground.

Joshua Poole, a local aviation enthusiast, told The Sun: “My parents called me to ask if I was OK because they thought it was a car accident.

“I drove over to make sure it wasn’t someone we know.

“There was just smoke everywhere.

– There was a lot of fire and a lot of smoke.

Derbyshire Police have confirmed that a body has been found in the wreckage of the plane.

A police spokesman said: “The pilot of a light aircraft which crashed in an industrial area near Chesterfield has died.

“Emergency services were called to the crash off Sheepbridge Lane, in Sheepbridge, Chesterfield, earlier today (Sunday, September 1).

“The investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.

“The pilot was the only person on board and was killed in the crash. His family has been notified.

“Roads in the immediate vicinity are closed and will remain closed for some time while the investigation continues.”

They added that the investigation will be handed over to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch today.
