Pokémon Go: Spheal Community Day Guide (January 2021)

Spheal is the featured Pokémon for the Community Day in January 2021 within Pokémon Go. Every month, trainers can look forward to a new Community Day. For this day, a single Pokémon will have its spawn rate drastically increased. Players will also have the chance to encounter its Shiny form. The odds of encountering a Shiny Pokémon increase during Community Days, letting trainers collect multiple Shiny Pokémon at a time. Niantic officially announced Spheal, the Ice/Water-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region, will be the first Community Day Pokémon for 2021.

Shortly after the final Pokémon Go Community Day of 2021, a blog post featuring all the information about Spheal Community Day was released. This event will take place Sunday, January 16, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. Spheal will also have its Shiny Odds brought down to 1/25, meaning with every new encounter, trainers will have a 1/25 chance of it appearing Shiny. Not only that, but players can unlock an exclusive attack if they evolve Sealeo, Spheal’s evolution, into Walrein. It will either learn the Charged Attack Icicle Spear or the Fast Attack Powder Snow.

Spheal Community Day will last for six hours, giving trainers tons of time to complete everything they need to. Many smaller active bonuses are also available during this event. It’s important to mention that there is a chance for players to encounter a Shiny Spheal already in the game and is one of the few Pokémon with its Shiny form already available. Having said that, Community Day is the best way to find Spheal’s Shiny variation. These tips and tricks will help players make the most out of Spheal Community Day.

  • Grinding XP: This Community Day will feature a bonus of x3 Catch XP. If trainers equip a Lucky Egg, they can earn up to x6 XP. Participating in this Community Day is a great way to level up fast. The bonus will be active throughout the event.
  • Aim For Six Shiny Spheal: Six might seem like a specific number, but there’s a reason for it. The first three will help players obtain Shiny versions of Spheal, Sealeo, and Walrein for their Shiny Dex. As for the other three, the player should save them. It’s common for other players to want to trade for Shiny Pokémon. So it can be a helpful haggling tool down the line.
  • The Spheal Deal: This is the Special Research Story that players can purchase for about $1 US. It features exclusive tasks that will remain in the player’s task list until they complete it. For just one dollar, it adds more content for the day.

Incenses and Lure Modules activated during this event will also last for three hours, relatively longer than the usual 30 minutes. As 2021 approaches, Pokémon Go is already prepping for future events. For February, trainers can look forward to the upcoming Pokémon Go Johto Tour event. This premium event will give players the chance to capture Shiny versions of every Pokémon from the Johto region. While this event has a definite date and time, the Community Day for February has yet to be announced. It will likely be revealed once the Spheal Community Day comes to a close.
