Pooja was born on March 22, 1984 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. As a teenager, she was quite a tomboy. During her school days, she participated in many extracurricular activities. She is good at horse riding, swimming, Bharatnatyam and Kathakali dance. She was also the Karnataka regional and state shuttle champion. During college, she decided to enter the entertainment industry and began participating in beauty pageants. She is now one of the famous South Indian actresses and has shot in different languages like Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

She attended Baldwin Girls High School in Bangalore and Stans Anglo Indian High School in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. She graduated in Visual Communication (B.Sc.) from Bishop Appasami College of Arts and Sciences, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. At the age of 8, she shot her first television commercial and at the age of 18, she shot her first Malayalam film, Yathrakarude Sradhakku. In 2004, she won the Miss Coimbatore beauty pageant. In 2005, she participated in the Miss Kerala beauty pageant and emerged as the first runner-up.
