She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Botany from Hansraj College, Delhi University, graduating in 1980. He is also the Chairman of the Coordination Committee of All Bar Associations, a member of the Legal Committee of the Indian Olympic Association, Vice Chairman of the Delhi Olympic Association and former President of the New Delhi District Bar Association.

From 1983 to 1987, Poonam A. Bamba practiced as an Advocate before the District Court and High Court of Delhi. From 1987 to 1996, she served as Legal Officer of Punjab National Bank and Deputy Chief Officer (Legal) of Central Bank of India. From 1996 to 2002, she worked with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Mumbai as Division Head (Legal) and Joint Legal Advisor. During this period, she represented these banks and SEBI before various courts in India and the Securities Appellate Tribunal, Mumbai. Poonam is also a trained mediator.
Judge
On December 5, 2002, she joined the Delhi High Judiciary. Over the next 19 years, she sat as a judge in different courts including the Matrimonial Court, the Family Court, the Land Acquisition Court, the Court of Appeal under the Public Places (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupiers) Act 1971 and the District Court . From 2013 to 2015, she served as Special Judge, CBI, in the Patiala House Court, New Delhi. She worked in different districts for about five years, including in Saket South East district from December 2016 to April 2017, in New Delhi district Patiala House Court from May 2017 to May 2019, and in South District Sackett Court House as Chief District and Sessions Judge from May 2019 to August 2021. In March 2022, she was appointed as a permanent judge of the Delhi High Court.

She retires on August 31, 2023. Although Poonam has held many positions, she says that serving as a judge is her most fulfilling job.
It gives me huge satisfaction not only on a professional level but also on a personal level. Professionally, whenever I can meaningfully touch lives in any small way, whether it’s with a haggard spouse, a traumatized child, an abandoned child, a parent of a senior citizen, a criminal on trial, someone whose land is being expropriated When dealing with businesses or citizens, or even terrorists. Personally, I owe my exponential growth and evolution as a person entirely to the judiciary. ”

Famous cases
2011 Terrorist Financing Case
The three were found guilty by the Patiala House Court in Delhi in the 2011 terror financing case and sentenced to the time they had already served. District Judge Poonam Bamba convicted Mohd Sadiq Ginai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo and Farooq Ahmed Dagga under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, to which they had pleaded guilty. They are accused of running an illegal money transfer business to fund the Hizbul Mujahideen terror group in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed charges against them in 2011, accusing them of receiving over Rs 457 crore from Pakistan through illegal channels to finance terror activities in the valley. Separately, the NIA in April filed charges against Syed Shahid Yusuf, the son of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin, on multiple counts related to Terrorist financing related offences. On May 31, the Delhi High Court refused bail to Shahid Yusuf.
Police Complaints Bureau
The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court directed that Justice Bamba’s name be considered for the post of Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA). Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena approved the appointment of Justice Bamba as Chairman. The PCA was formed to handle complaints against the Delhi Police.

Poonam is the author of four books. “The Perfect Marriage Is Not a Mirage” was published in 2010. The book narrates Poonam’s experience of married life while serving as Additional District Judge in the Marriage Court. She subsequently wrote “The Temple of Justice – The School of Life”, which was published in 2016.

She also wrote How to Save Your Marriage, published in 2018. The book also explores Judge Bamba’s experiences with discordant couples in the courtroom and is intended to be a self-help book. In 2020, her book “Parents at War: Custody Battles in Indian Courts” was published. The book revisits her experiences in matrimonial court, focusing on the plight of her children caught up in a custody battle.

- Poonam Bamba enjoys observing nature and is also a bird watcher.
- Poonam said in an interview that she cares deeply about mental health. As District Judge of Patiala House Court, she came up with the Know Your Colleague Forum and Wellbeing Committee to ensure that mental health was not neglected. Poonam called the forum and committee an “immediate success.”

- Poonam said she is very interested in environmental issues. She works hard to establish miniature forests and participates in tree adoption efforts at the District Court.
- Poonam said she was waiting to enter university to pursue a master’s degree in botany before joining law. While she waited, her father convinced her to join the legal profession, which she loved, and to pursue it while she earned her master’s degree.
